Months go by like weeks now. It's either because I love this job, or that I'm not writing enough posts between Updates. Probably both, but that's okay. I'll get faster because I love this job.

Let's see what's up with InnerFidelity this month...

Have you ever had the experience of looking at something, and your brain can't figure out what it is, and you stare but can not perceive?

"Otra Sanata" is something like that.

I don't want to break my arm patting myself on the back or anything, but heck, I do have a category for news.

And I reckon being mentioned in the NY Times is a bit of good news.

When I first saw the Monster Beats by Dr. Dre Solo ($199 MSRP) I thought they might be the most beautiful headphones I’d ever seen. The fit and finish is stellar; the styling superb; they fold beautifully; the cable is pure sex; they’re comfortable … the Solos are just gorgeous. At the time I thought, “These may be the headphone of the year!”

Except for one little thing …

Headphone enthusiasm is alive and well in Japan! Fujia AVIC, an electronics on-line and brick-and-mortar retailer in Tokyo, organizes a bi-annual headphone festival that is headphone otaku at it's finest.

October has come and gone ... way too fast. CanJam at RMAF was fun, but you've read about that by now. Let's see what else happened in the lab.

I'm making ready to head off to RMAF, but I certainly didn't want to shirk my duties measuring Stax headphones, and getting them back to their rightful owners.

Here we go ...

Top Gear is one of the BBC’s biggest shows. They evaluate expensive cars in entertaining ways then turn them over to their anonymous racing driver, known only as The Stig, to find out how fast they’ll lap their track. Some say NwAvGuy is Stig’s geeky cousin. Instead of testing cars, as an Electrical Engineer, I design and test audio gear. I want to thank Tyll for requesting my thoughts on measuring electronics. I'm all for improving measurements

WHY MEASUREMENTS? Here are some key reasons:

Well, it has taken me six months, but I've finally managed to paint myself into a corner. I'm beginning to drown in the incoming headphones from the Stax Mafia, an over-abundance of celebrity cans, and DIYers sending their beloved projects.

Let's take a moment to breathe and reflect on the month's activities, and things to come.

It's not often one get's to set-up $37,000+ worth of the world's best headphone gear on the dining room table. I should do a little comparative listening test and report my findings, methinks.

Wasn't easy to write with all the good music going on in my head, though.

In a rather shady headphone forum out there on the interweb (that will remain unnamed) lives a group of gentlemen who call themselves: "The Stax Mafia." In recent weeks, having become aware of my work measuring headphones, they've "requested" that I make some measurements of electrostatic headphones.

I just couldn't resist. (I don't want to wake up with a goat head on the pillow next to me.)

Subjectivist: "Man, I got my headphones last week and they're breaking in nicely."
Obectivist: "Yer nuts, dude, it's your head breaking in to the sound of your new headphones."
Subjectivist: "Leave me alone, troll, take your objectivism to 'Sound Science.' We have the minds of Gods and poets, and don't need your weights and measures to know what we know what we know."
Objectivist: "What can I say to someone who's their own placebo?"
Subjectivist: "Break-in exists ... I've heard it ... I stamp my feet three times and you will go away."
Objectivist: "Lol ... you couldn't blind test your way out of a paper bag!"

And so it goes.

Let's try to clear a bit of this up, eh?

Summer's a beautiful thing in Montana, it doesn't last long enough, though. September is here, and the fall weather is starting to show up, believe it or not. Ah well, more time inside the house measuring headphones I suppose.

Speaking of which, lots of new cans, and some interesting things upcoming!

In a recent email, Stereophile's Stephan Mejias inquired of Editor John Atkinson, "Um, is that a Peachtree DAC?"

John responded that it indeed did look like a Peachtree, but didn't know what the headphones were, so I was cc'ed on the exchange.

Little did they know, they were opening up one of the classic, often funny, and at times a little creepy topics in Headphonedom.
