Astell&Kern launch T5p 2nd Generation over-ear and Jerry Harvey-Designed IEM Headphones

Companies releasing limited-edition headphones are seemingly starting to follow the idea of cachet that high-end sneaker manufacturers have been monopolizing for years when it comes to rarity and street cred.

It’s an interesting sales model and one that creates intense hype and buzz within a close-knit community like those that both sneaker freakers and hardcore headphone lovers share.

Who hasn’t seen hundreds of teens and twenty-somethings (and the odd mid-40s collector) patiently (but expectantly) standing in a line winding around a city block at 7 a.m. – hours before the shop opens to scoop up a pair of limited-run Yeezy 4Ds (or similar rare collaboration kicks).

Astell&Kern are a street-savvy high-fidelity portables company and know the value of creating something with high value, quality and aesthetic appeal, so when I saw the press release yesterday that their new $1,199 USD AK T5p 2nd Generation headphone (which I had heard a preview of at Rocky Mountain Audio fest in early October) was going to be ready in one-to-two weeks to hit both real and virtual shelves for online sales and that the company had limited the production run to 1,000 units, I couldn’t help but low-whistle at the savvy of the move.

People always clamour for what they want, especially if there’s a good chance they won’t get it. So, without further ado, here’s the presser from A&K on the new T5p, if you want a set, order fast and order early:

Press release The AK T5p 2nd Gen headphone is produced for Astell&Kern by Beyerdynamic and has been tuned for Astell&Kern players, and shows off the best-in-class details, clarity and supreme bass for listeners.

The AK T5p uses Beyerdynamic’s Tesla Technology transducers that feature high efficiency and low impedance and provides a comfortable and superb music listening experience, that can be paired with any audio sources including smartphones, laptops, and other tablet settings.

The AK T5p 2nd Gen comes with a detachable cable that is specifically designed for the AK T5p. The cables are made of four pure silver cables and four OCC copper cables braided together. It is designed to present the exact characteristics of the headphone’s Tesla Technology™ drivers, with balanced and natural sound. The cable is terminated in a 2.5mm four-pole balanced connector to match the balanced headphone out on Astell&Kern players.  A 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter and a quarter-inch connection adaptor are also included.

Each AK T5p 2nd Gen is hand-built in Heilbronn, Germany using premium sheepskin earpads and headbands, and it delivers exact sound quality you expect with the best-in-class comfort. The decorative black metal face place completes the design of these premium headphones.  A carrying case is also included to store the headphones.

The AK T5p 2nd generation will be produced in a limited quantity of 1,000 pieces and will be available November 2018 for $1,199 USD.

Also new from Astel&Kern and expected to ship this December, are a $799 USD universal-fit IEM developed by Jerry Harvey Audio and built in-house by A&K. The model is loaded-up with Harvey’s patented “Freqphase technology, with a new sound-bore design first developed and adapted for the Billie Jean IEMs” according to the company.

With dedicated treble, mid and bass drivers, the three-way, three-transducer designs are kitted out with new Balanced Armatures and cover the frequency spectrum from 10Hz to 5kHz.

Press release highlights below

With a beautiful, full-metal shell made in aluminum, our new IEM not only delivers a visually impressive design, but also produces a more solid sound profile that allows the listener to enjoy the most ideal sound without distortion across all sound ranges.

Featuring a 3-way, 3-driver design that provides a dedicated single high, single mid-range and single low balanced armature per channel for best sound reproduction.  Jerry Harvey developed a whole new Balanced Armature Driver designed to offer Reference-quality IEMs for Mastering and mixing works. The high-range drivers are designed to deliver everything with minimum distortion, while the mid driver offers perfect, flat sound from 10Hz to 5kHz.  The bass driver was designed for an even steeper low-pass effect with no distortion.

Also included with the new IEM is an all-new 2-pin 2.5mm balanced cable first developed for the AK T5p 2nd Generation headphones.  The cable is made with 4N pure silver with silver plated 7N OCC to deliver the perfect highs; and the 7N OCC to bring out the lows. This hybrid construction of pure silver, silver OCC and OCC litz cable creates a unique harmony. No more sharp highs or too much bass, you achieve the perfect balance to your music with this unique cable.

Additional accessories include a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter, silicon ear tips (small, medium and large) and a carrying case.

The new model will be available in December 2018 for $799 USD.

I this the same as the Beyerdynamics T5p (Gen2)? Looks very similar and has the same driver. What is different here?

It's built by Beyerdynamics in a limited edition for A&K.
