CanJam at RMAF 2015: V-MODA Crossfade Wireless Headphones

It's always a treat to have a good chat with Val Kolton, Founder and CEO of V-MODA. His energy and creativity is interesting and fun, and—very importantly to me—he strikes me as extremely pragmatic and effective. Val has stylish good sense, it seems to me. This time it appears as the V-MODA Crossfade Wireless headphone ($300), and a line of 3D Custom Shields ($25 to >$10,000!) for all V-MODA models.

Val and I mostly talked about the sound of one particular early synthesizer used by hip-hop artists that propagated as a ubiquitous background heard in sampled music. But we did eventually get around to the new Crossfade Wireless headphone. Modeled after the Crossfade M-100—which I liked very much—the new wireless model adds the ability to wirelessly Bluetooth to your phone.

Sounds simple, but very few headphone models manage the transition without taking a big hit to sonic performance. I thought the Crossfade Wireless sounded quite good—though a bit bassy somewhat like the M-100—which is a heck of a trick considering acoustics around the electronics and battery now in the ear capsules. Pretty sure I'll be reviewing this one.

The Custom Shields are damned cool. There's a huge range of options from $25 aluminum up to precious metals ($$Ka-ching!!), and they all look really great.

Val just has a sense of style that makes me feel like I'm a hillbilly with the way I dress ;-)

I'd have a heart attack if Val showed up someday while wearing shorts and a t-shirt like me.
