The Question Question Contest

It was quality over quantity in the last contest. We sure got some good answers. Check it out!

This week we're going to do something a little different.

I'd really like for these contests to work well, which means they need to be fun and interesting. I'd like them to be good content as well as a way for Headphones.com to express their generosity. So, I'm going to open the floor to your ideas, which will probably be way more interesting than relying solely on mine.

This Week's Contest
Please suggest a contest question, or an idea for future contests. Have fun with it, I'm totally open to any ideas you might have. I'll pick a winner, and that will be the contest next time.

Also, I'm going to be doing the contests more like every two weeks from now on ... I think every week is just too often --- so you have a little time to think of ideas.

This time the winner will receive a Phonak Audéo PFE 121 (value $159). Like the one I just reviewed. A very nice gift indeed. Big thanks to Headphones.com and Audéo for the prize.

What about "Explain what Bit Depth is and what Sampling Rates are"

"Why (or why not) does sound quality matter to you?"

SAS's picture

Is it more important for an audio system to faithfully reproduce whatever is on the recording or to make all recordings sound good?

Should headphones try to re-create the spatial illusion of listening to speakers or is the unique perspective of "normal" headphones a valuable alternative?

UtzY's picture

When you read about headphones that you would want to buy in the future, what do you seek and value first?
A good, subjective review, or some good measurements?
(why?)

OR

What would you rather chose and why? A headphone with a good review or a headphone that have good measurements?

rgovett's picture

What type of headphones do you listen to on the way to work and why?

There are always a few that pop into my head...

Should sound signature preferences matter?

Can we really hear above 20kHz?

Why is frontal localization in binaural recordings so difficult to reproduce accurately? or alternatively...Do you have a zone of confusion?

Should natural sound be synonymous with neutral presentation?

What features are most important in a headphone to you and why?

Other contest ideas...

Have readers write articles, and then submit them to you, Tyll, the editor. They can be anything--product reviews, technical explanations, how-to guides, etc. There can even be videos. Of course, if they're headphone reviews, it would be nice if they were sent over for measurements.

Since Wes Phillips isn't available, how about readers as contributors? You pick the finalists every round, then publish their articles here. Hopefully, a few of them will meet your standards. After watching the comments, you'll have a better idea of the winners.

I like yuriv's suggestion very much.

I figured that a passionate hobby\proffesion like this should be available to all ages… So here is my modest contribution!

Try and find the hidden words!

Hamm... some small malicious modification happens while posting it.
Ho well...

"How to hide/justify your newest purchase to your significant other."

It will be an interesting (or at least amusing) contest and also a valuable resource for everyone else afterwards.

So, given your avatar, you simply hold your SO upsidedown until she cries, "Uncle?" :)

We were actually in the middle of a dance performance there. Swing dancing if you must know. I have yet to find a set of headphones that can survive the rigors of a dance...

I occasionally placate my SO with cute yet thoughtful audio gifts like this:

Every post has a haiku!
Contests could be held to show it:
Every reader is a poet.

About the stuff of our addiction,
write some verses with conviction.
And to make it worth our time,
replies to comments also rhyme:
put-downs, insults, disses that'll
rap just like an MC battle.

Surely, you can do no worse
than this post in rhyming verse.

We have a winner!

Thanks for playing folks, great stuff! I'm sure I'll be using more of your questions as time goes on, but the winner is SAS with:

"Is it more important for an audio system to faithfully reproduce whatever is on the recording or to make all recordings sound good?"

That's a biggie, I'd love to hear our comments in the new contest.
