Electron microscopes are filled with myriad and dissimilar technological hurdles to overcome: high voltage adjustable power supplies; precise and adjustable analog scan generators; adjustable magnetic lenses; precise and finely adjustable mechanics for physically moving the sample; and optional complex systems like x-ray spectrometer analysis of specimen chemistry. SEMs are COMPLEX!

I just can't believe an SEM is a viable DIY project ...

I recently visited Dr. Sean Olive, Harman International's Director of Acoustic Research and president-elect of the Audio Engineering Society, for an in-depth rundown on their ground-breaking work on understanding the relationship between the subjective and objective performance of headphones.

Oh my, this is seriously good stuff.

The web is abuzz with the news: a little monster has been unleashed upon the headphone market as Kevin Lee, son of Monster's Head Monster Noel Lee, breaks out on his own to start a new headphone company "SOL Republic."

Out on my morning web surf and I stumble onto a bombshell on the front page of Head-Fi:

"Sony MDR-Z1R Measurements: Head-Fi HQ’s compared to InnerFidelity’s"

That article links to a much more comprehensive post in the Z1R thread by Jude Mansilla, Head-Fi's Founder. It seems Jude's measurements are somewhat different than mine, particularly in terms of the peak in response around 10kHz. Here are the two plots in question.....

Wanting to spend a lot of time listening to headphone cables, I decided to return to the task of programming my amp measurement routine. Damn, can't listen and program at the same time.

Well, I've promised headphone amp measurements for InnerFidelity's second birthday, and I'm gonna deliver. There's still a couple of glitches, so I can't quite say it's final. But it's close.

Been grinding away at the amp measurement routine and I think we're there. I would like some comments though before I measure a bunch of headphone amps this weekend.

At it hot and heavy in the lab setting up amp measurements. Started with Total Harmonic Distortion + Noise vs. Frequency tests. Sent electrons whirling through a handfull of amps to see what the numbers said.

Wanna see?

A couple of months ago, out of the clear blue, I was approached by the folks at Listen Inc. to see if I was interested in having an equipment sponsor for my headphone measurement program. After a few moments of stunned silence I said, "Um, sure, let's talk about it."

I've been avoiding this for quite a while now. I knew it wouldn't show a damn thing. Puts me in a pickle because I can hear differences between cables...I'm pretty sure. Ah well, you gotta throw the objectivists a bone every now and then.

Alrighty then, I've listened for hours and hours, read dozens of threads, talked with experts on the phone, and I'm now ready to wrap this thing up.

Don't expect a miracle.

I've been doing quite a bit of clean-up and re-organizing with the measurement datasheets. The main objective was to sort the headphones into various types: Full-size open; full-size sealed; earpad open; earpad sealed; in-ear; ear bud; noise cancelling; and wireless.

I've also added a goodly number of new headphone measurements. All measurements can be seen one page at a time on the Headphone Datasheet Download Page, or all measurements can be downloaded at once in the Headphone Measurement Datasheet .pdf booklet.

More Apple talk...that 3.5mm jack may be going away sooner than I predicted.

I have a suspicion that the major labels are up to good things.

And a couple of fun Kickstarter campaigns.

In headphone news: miniature electrostatic headphone drivers, MOG is morphing, Bloomberg tells the kids to quiet down, some Apple musing, headphone connectors at Furutec, and more.

A new month already!? Damn. I think I'll put up a news post that's been brewing, and forego a Monthly Update as I haven't got a lot of cans measured this month. A lot coming next month though.

On with the news!
