Like it or not, Monster has done more for the recent success of headphones than any one else. They've moved headphones from just another audio accessory, to a major stand-alone audio category in the mind of the popular culture. Headphone sales have climbed strongly over the past three years in the face of economic turmoil, and Monster has played the major roll in that success.

I'd say it's mostly been an exersize in marketing and supply chain acumen so far, but the deal with HTC may change all that.

Last week I had the great pleasure of being invited (along with Jude Mansilla of Head-Fi.org and Michael Ting and Lieven Vranken of Headfonia.com) to Philips Innovation Lab in Leuven, Belgium. We were treated to a spectacularly interesting and invigorating presentation of Philip's efforts to re-establish themselves as a premier supplier of audio/video gear in general, and headphones in particular, in the 21st century.

To me, it's a story of corporate will, and the power that comes with large corporate resources and talented, clear-thinking researchers. It's a story of what it takes to turn a huge ship towards a new destination.

I don't want to break my arm patting myself on the back or anything, but heck, I do have a category for news.

And I reckon being mentioned in the NY Times is a bit of good news.

Audio researchers find that trained listeners yield more consistant test results in subjective listening tests. Well, I suppose that means you or I would do a better job evaluating gear if we had some training, no? How does one go about getting this training? Do you have to work for some big audio research organization?

NO!!! Now Philips has release a version of their training program on-line—it's free, and it's fun!

InnerFidelity's First Birthday!

One year!? Already!? I can hardly believe it. I figure it's a good time to take a moment and look how InnerFidelity is doing.

Let's do the numbers ...

Some will, no doubt, say "MOAR IS BETTA!", but let's not go there. Please select which best describes what you see and are looking for in bass response measurements.

Feel free to elaborate on how useful bass headphone measurements are to you in the comments.

After submitting your vote, click here for the next poll, and here if you missed for the introductory post.

How do You Evaluate Bass Measurements?
I'd like to see a nice flat line, and I know what it looks like.
30% (41 votes)
I get the plots, and I like the +3dB boost of the Harman target response.
49% (68 votes)
I get 'em. I really don't mind a gently rolling-off bass; lots of cans have it.
8% (11 votes)
To tell the truth, the bass often seems somewhat different than the plots.
11% (15 votes)
MOAR BASS!!! (Editor's Note: Hey, I said knock it off!)

August is here. This is when it usually starts to get hot in Montana, but this year we've been running 80s and 90s for more than a month now. Got some hot headphones in this last month as well.

And a few cold ones.

I've just completed the June measurements update. All the new cans are on the Headphone Datasheet Downloads page, and in the All Graphs PDF.

New headphones this month include:

  • Many of the Ultrasone line.
  • The new Shure SRH950.
  • The New Beyerdynamic DJX-1 (it's pretty good).
  • Numerous Denon IEMs.
  • Grado GR8.
  • Spider Cables realvoice IEM
  • Second measurements of Beyer's Tesla cans.
  • And ... measurements of the latest LCD2 ... now with more highs!

A new month already!? Damn. I think I'll put up a news post that's been brewing, and forego a Monthly Update as I haven't got a lot of cans measured this month. A lot coming next month though.

On with the news!

Lots of great questions and comments from last contest asking for topics, but the one that caught my eye came from SAS ...

InnerFidelity writers are busy writing basic introductory content for the Ultimate Headphone Guide. In this article, Joker gives his guidance on inserting in-ear monitors.

I'm making ready to head off to RMAF, but I certainly didn't want to shirk my duties measuring Stax headphones, and getting them back to their rightful owners.

Here we go ...

I've laughed, gasped, marveled, and applauded the rise of Schiit Audio in the headphone world.

Wanna know how that Schiit happened?

Requests for review samples have been arriving regularly, and empty boxes strew the living room floor.

Got a fair few measurements done, though.

I spent the weekend listening through Chesky's new Ultimate Headphone Demonstration Disc and a few of the albums released using the Binaural+ techniques and technologies. First observation: Man, did I get sucked into the music a lot!

Second observation? The first would have been enough all by itself, but the overarching impression of about 12 hours of listening in the past few days is that I had been in the presence of not just the music, but with the musicians as well. Very unusual, and very satisfying.
