Besides major new-product introductions, must-do auditioning, and big-time meet-n-greet, CanJam New York 2019 appears to have a theme, which just so happens to be one of my favorite topics: headphone measurements.

If you have never heard of the SoCal event called NAMM, fret not. The annual show-and-tell from the National Association of Musician Merchants in Anaheim California lays on the far fringes of audiophiledom. It is fairly big however, occupying more than one of the massive convention halls on site in Orange County with 115,000 attendees and 7,000 brands represented.

Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Play apps both listen very carefully to what we’re all saying and while Roon does something altogether different than voice-activated access to data of all types, it seems Roon Labs are listening just as intently to their (audiophile) audience.

The trek out to CES in Las Vegas isn’t usually as bad as actually getting around at the show. The event is absolutely massive in comparison to the usual audiophile circuit, and most of the new headphone tech is housed in the very populated South Hall of the LV Convention Center. The South Hall at CES 2019 (and the direction of headphones in general) can be summed up in two words for 2019 – “True Wireless.”

You asked for it and they listened. CES in Las Vegas saw audio calibration software company Sonarworks officially announce the launch of their Tru-Fi mobile application which will be available for $3.99 USD per month or a lifetime license agreement of $99 USD from the App Store and Google Play.

Choosing a product that qualifies as one that stands out above all others for enough different reasons is never an easy task, but taking sound quality, build quality, design and price all into consideration, the Quad ERA-1 headphones gets my nod as InnerFidelity Product of The Year 2018.

Tackling a list featuring the upper-tier of headphone and headphone-related products and peripherals one tends to finds options that are focused on the end-game as opposed to ladder-climbing. This is really where the rubber meets the road from a cost-analysis standpoint, as if you're dropping serious coin one wants longevity and future-proof built-in to the purchase, which is what I feel all these products represent: a long-term investment.

2018 is rapidly coming to a close and with it, the window to highlight some of, what I feel, were the most impressive components and headphones that I experienced this year.

In a world that seems bent on division when it comes to the streaming and download/playback format MQA, Astell & Kern has placed themselves even more solidly in the for MQA column with their announcement today that as of December 12th (tomorrow), MQA support (which is already available on the SP1000 portable player) will be available via firmware update for the SP1000M, SE100 and SR15 players as well.

I wandered the downtown Vancouver streets, slightly dazed as it was early, the coffee in my hand only half-finished and thus not fully waking my mind to operating temperature. It was, after all, the beginning of December and things like holiday gift shopping for our families and friends was starting to dawn more brightly every morning into the waking brains of the urban populace (who surround my small oasis of a home in the city) as the month creeps forward inexorably to it’s zenith on the 25th and the all the expectations which surround that date.

The Bluetooth wireless headphone market is huge and growing, as is modern consumers bent for yelling everything at Amazon’s voice assistant they can manage while roaming the confines of their homes: “Alexa, queue up my punk-rock play list!”

Like the spectral terror of dead mariners wading ashore from an ocean mist as it engulfs a small Californian coastal town in John Carpenter’s 1980 horror film The Fog, so too does Black Friday creep up on us to lay waste to our savings accounts and credit card balances.

For those audiophile souls whose hearts beat a little faster when they know there’s a hi-fi show to attend, then either reset your pacemakers, put down that whisky, or throw on a sweatband because – steady on now – there’s two shows this weekend on either side of the pond as our British kin love to call the Atlantic Ocean.

Due to a number of recent unauthorized solicitations to high-fidelity manufacturers, distributors and media-relations personnel for review equipment, we feel it necessary to post this policy reminder.
