Goldfinger is the third James Bond film starring Sean Connery and the 1964 spy thriller is one of my favourite films of all time, not the least of the reasons being the movie’s iconic antagonist Auric Goldfinger played by Gert Fröbe.

French hi-fi manufacturing powerhouse Focal has been focused on delivering powerful, transparent drivers for both their two-channel loudspeaker designs and their highly-competitive headphones for many years and with their new Elegia closed-back headphone they continue that tradition.

Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Play apps both listen very carefully to what we’re all saying and while Roon does something altogether different than voice-activated access to data of all types, it seems Roon Labs are listening just as intently to their (audiophile) audience.

This is a more than capable phono/headphone preamplifier at $600 USD, at $299 USD it is an out-and-out bargain and why I named it to my InnerFidelity Editor’s Choice 2018 – Under $500 list. Dynamic, punchy, nuanced when it needs to be, this simply makes listening to LPs a fun, engaging and educational experience as it revealed a lot of detail in its resolution-abilities that had me relaxing and enjoying albums that I hadn’t hauled down from the shelves for years.

Bluetooth continues to muscle in on high-end headphone audio as a viable high-resolution alternative to getting tangled up in cables and Audeze is wasting no time capitalizing on the success of it’s Mobius wireless gaming headset’s cutting-edge Bluetooth implementation by spreading that wireless love to the both popular and critically-acclaimed iSINE series of micro planar-magnetic IEMs.

You asked for it and they listened. CES in Las Vegas saw audio calibration software company Sonarworks officially announce the launch of their Tru-Fi mobile application which will be available for $3.99 USD per month or a lifetime license agreement of $99 USD from the App Store and Google Play.

I’m old school in many, many ways, but I’m also a fierce adopter of new technology as well – just at my own pace and in my own way. I’m not on anyone’s bandwagon, I tend to march to my own drummer. So, when an old-school company starts coming out with new gear, I tend to pay attention because I feel – like me – they’ve taken a beat to assess the latest and then come out with something in their own way and in their own time.

Choosing a product that qualifies as one that stands out above all others for enough different reasons is never an easy task, but taking sound quality, build quality, design and price all into consideration, the Quad ERA-1 headphones gets my nod as InnerFidelity Product of The Year 2018.

Tackling a list featuring the upper-tier of headphone and headphone-related products and peripherals one tends to finds options that are focused on the end-game as opposed to ladder-climbing. This is really where the rubber meets the road from a cost-analysis standpoint, as if you're dropping serious coin one wants longevity and future-proof built-in to the purchase, which is what I feel all these products represent: a long-term investment.

Headphones companies in general are stepping their game up in the lifestyle arena just as much in the technology, sound quality and bespoke fabrication ones. The focus on presentation of headphones in advertising, social media and at trade shows has become an art and science unto itself as ever more manufacturers invest huge sums of money into R&D, design, materials selection, and marketing than ever before IMO.
