Climbing up the price ladder in personal audio doesn’t always guarantee you’ll be happier with the sonics – just like two-channel there can be sideways moves or tradeoffs – but, it usually means you’re getting better spec’d, better built and better sounding gear as a rule, as opposed to being the exception.

Another year has flown by and with it another of year experiencing as much of the personal-audio hobby as we’re able to here at InnerFidelity. There have been many standout products that we were fortunate enough to have grace our pages in 2019, but the following were truly impressive for not only performance, but for price and build quality.

Everybody dreads gift giving a bit – it’s too time consuming. The holiday season is already tough enough. What about if you need to find something for the headphone-centric audiophile in your life. Good luck, you hear friends say.

There’s a 30-year-old photograph of me somewhere sporting a Public Enemy tour t-shirt, with a Sony Walkman in one hand. Fast forward to today and you can swap the Walkman for the Astell&Kern SR15 A&norma.

Iconic. Merriam Webster defines it as ”widely known and acknowledged especially for distinctive excellence.” Seems like a reasonable place to want to start a list about headphone designs that had a lasting impact on the hobby, and more importantly, on how the world views the head space as a whole.

Full disclosure: I’m not American and in Canada we celebrate Thanksgiving in early October, so it’s always strange to us up here when the holiday rolls around again from the south with its accompanying blitz of sales.

1974 was a year that saw Happy Days debut on ABC, Richard Nixon resign, the Ali-Foreman Rumble in the Jungle fight in Zaire, and the establishment of the David Berning Company, which produced vacuum-tube amplifiers based around a unique impedance converter known as ZOTL for ‘Zero-Hysteresis Output Transformerless.’

It seems that the headphone market, like the two-channel hi-fi market, is starting to resemble the computer market: A rapid release cycle for new product launches. Look no further than Audeze with news today that they are releasing the $399 USD LCD-1, a lightweight, foldable, planar-magnetic in a compact design.

Raise your hand if you’re a sucker for slick industrial design mixed with luxurious accents of leather and chrome. I’ve got two hands up because this could mean not only headphones, but hi-fi, motorcycles, automobiles or watches – all things in which I value style, performance and most of all; the improvement to the quality of life these objects can bring.
