Heh, so I guess those Canadian airline buds I sent never arrived eh? Seems appropriate that they got lost in the mail.
InnerFidelity September Update!!!

Summer's a beautiful thing in Montana, it doesn't last long enough, though. September is here, and the fall weather is starting to show up, believe it or not. Ah well, more time inside the house measuring headphones I suppose.
Speaking of which, lots of new cans, and some interesting things upcoming!
Last Month's Measurements
Had a very interesting month measuring headphones. Aside from those in reviews, new measurements include:
- The Soul by Ludacris SL300, SL150, and SL100 are all measured. They seemed a bit better than the competition from Dr. Dre.
- The Beyer T70 250 Ohm, which didn't sound very good to me.
- The new HiFiMAN HE-300, which didn't either.
- Got my hands on a couple brand new Fostex T50RP planar-magnetic cans, they measured and sounded okay, and I'm gonna modify one until it's Smeggerific!
- A little batch of full-sized sealed cans: the Denon AH-D1001, which is interesting to compare to the Creative Aurvana Live!; the terrific price/performance Sennheiser HD 201; the not-so-good Audio Technica ATH-M10; and the even worse Klipsch Image One.
- On-ear cans measured include: the venerable, great sounding, and often requested Koss Porta Pro (KSC75 measurements next month); on a whim the Audio Technica ATH--ES55; and the big surprise, the very nice Beyerdynamic DTX300p!
- And a handful of IEMs got in: Woodees Classics; Skullcandy Holua; Shure SE530; a new one to me PureSound ClarityOne; the Creative Aurvana In-Ear 3; and the very good sounding Klipsch X10!
Coming Measurements
Lots of stuff in the pipeline coming in for measurements. Some stalwart enthusiasts are banding together to get me some electrostatic headphones for measurements and an amp to borrow for a little while to get them done. Very cool, and VERY much appreciated! Thanks guys!
You'll notice the Ludacris cans above ... I've decided to do a major article on celebrity headphones since they're all the rage. Upcoming measurements will include: the Beats by Dre Solo HD, Studio, and Pro; a few of the House of Marley cans; I'm hoping to get my hands on the new Koss Tony Bennet headphone; and, though not in this month's update, I can tell you the new Skullcandy Mix Master measures extraordinarily well. I'm thinking of calling the article "Celebrity Headphone Deathmatch."
Burn-In
I'm trying to find the time to do the final burn-in test. I'm talking with SAS (a member here) who will be helping me with some of the experimental set-up and data analysis. I'd really like to do a 300 hour run ... that's about two weeks in the chamber. I'm going to try very hard to get that done this month or next, and will try to make sure nobodies headphones are sitting here for measurement when it happens. (Crosses fingers.)
Thanks!
This marks five months of InnerFidelity's life ... and mine. I feel very fortunate to have this job. It can be a bit of a juggling match trying to get headphones in, measured, possibly written on, and back out, but I'm enjoying every minute of it. I hope you are too.
My management has been REALLY great about letting me write whatever I want ... as long as it delivers pageviews. Traffic grew 30% last month, and the numbers are somewhat higher than we expected. It looks like InnerFidelity is well on the way to paying for itself. Thank you!!!
Though I don't get evaluated on them, they do matter very much to me, PLEASE feel free to make comments on InnerFidelity posts. They're great feedback for me, and very often the information is a super addition to the article. A big thank you to those who've commented, I really appreciate it.
Guess that's it for today, have a great September!

For airline buds, well I've heard worse. The impressive thing though is that they seem fairly robust. I use a pair as testers when I'm fiddling with my DIY amps and I've cranked nearly 2V offset (sometimes accidentally, sometimes intentionally) into those with seemingly no ill effect.

The catalogue still says "August 1, 2011" and there are two minor naming errors:
AKG K581LE -> AKG K518LE
Grado SR225 Comfy Pad with Hole -> Grado SR225i Comfy Pad with Hole

I can't wait to see the electrostatic headphone measurements especially since I know which phones and amp are heading your way. Specifically, I'm looking forward to seeing that square wave! Will they blow everything else out of the water? They seem like headphones that will look very good on paper.

I'm making popcorn.

The square wave is related to frequency, you can get the square wave from frequency alone. Same with impulse response...But I do think that there will be different and interesting things to see on electrostatic headphones.

Measurements, news, cool articles, and funny comments aside...it's nice to have a guy like you in this community Tyll. Congrats on the milestone and I wish you continued success.

Cool article!
How exactly do you do you THD measurement? What is the input signal?

What do the 3 peaks at 20, 200 and 2000 Hz represent?

Tyll,
Just wanted to let you know how much I am enjoying your thoughtful insight! As a fellow Montanan, it is fun to read, and sometimes watch, your reviews with your personal take on each product. Too often it seems reviewers are all too careful not to offend potential advertisers at the expense of an honest review, though most would deny this. You are straight forward and honest. Keep up the good work!

:)
Thanks mate, stay warm.

Glad that the blog is going good, I have been reading since the beginning and I hope that I can continue to read this for many years to come. Thanks for doing this!
I would love to see a dedicated review for the porta pros by the way.

Tyll, I noticed the mention of the hd201s above. Have you noticed any changes in the sound from the first time they were released and the current ones made today? It was just a little strange to me looking at the measurement having a slightly lean bass when I just listened to one a few days ago with big and tight bass. My brother has an old 201 but I couldn't confirm if the differences were there because his 201s now look like they have velour pads due to the flaked off pads LOL

Or I could it could have been just the unfamiliar source used during listening. Is the latest ipod classic on the bassy side even with the eq off? Anyways for such a low price, I'm buying one of those

Well I just bought one today and they are awesome cheap cans. These are very well balanced cans! They may lack refinement of expensive cans but its hard to get anything that have just the right amount of bass-mids-treble balance to become exciting yet balanced at the same time. I can't believe I didn't pay more attention to my brother's pair before.

The bass is just like the cans before I think. It was probably the stores ipod that sounded bassy or something.

Hi Tyll, I've been looking into the T70 recently, and was curious as to what you did not like about the T70 during these quick measurements.

That's too bad about the T70, I was hoping they were going to be a full-size DT1350. What is it with Beyer and treble spikes?
It would be great to see Mark Lawton modified Denons measured. If you're interested, I will be getting an LA7000 that I would be willing to send in.
It would be fascinating to see Stax Omega 2 SZ1 (Mk1) SZ2 (Mk2) and SZ3 (Mk2.5) measurements, hopefully the Stax community will be able to make that happen some day.
Anyway, love the site Tyll, keep up the great work.

Of my 4 Beyer DTX-300p's, 3 are now broken. Where the armature joins the earcup there's a rivet through the connector, and eventually the connector will split and fall off. I don't see any practical way to repair it. If you were to use these much, don't ever grab one side and pull them off of your head - that will add strain to the rivet-and-connector, facilitating the break.
Just as bad, the 4 DTX-300p's have quite a variance in bass response. Unfortunately, the recent good one broke and the one remaining has weak bass. The cushions and fit-to-ear are the same, and I don't hear anything in the sound to suggest that any of those 4 units were defective - just poor quality control in matching to the spec.
A few days ago at the Apple store I tried the Klipsch Image One again, having bought one when it came out and subsequently giving it away. With the iPod set to Bass Reducer EQ, the Image One sounded pretty good. With no EQ it was not good.

I'm looking forward to the day when Tony Bennett can send you his headphones for your measurements and impression. Hopefully you will like them!
It's going to be weird seeing a celebrity endorsed headphone that's probably only $80. Most of them cost an arm and a leg.
I have an early pre-production pair called the DJ100. Don't tell anyone.

I did a longer listen to the Klipsch Image One at the Apple store today, using my own iPod Touch with Bass Reducer EQ. I played 10 of the most important songs I have for critical evaluation, and all sounded very good. Oddly enough, the Bass Reducer setting has proven to be my near-universal fix for lower-priced headphones, whether Klipsch Image One, Philips Stretch, V-Moda M80/V80 (contrary to my original impressions), Phiaton MS-400, and perhaps a few others. I hope to purchase a Klipsch Reference One when it comes out instead of waiting for other reviews, and I hope I don't get stiffed like I did with the Beyer DT-1350.

Hi Tyle, I love your reviews. I read first then watch the vids for exactly the same info. ho ho. Anyway, having hopefully softened you up a bit......
Would you consider doing a page for your own personal ranking of headphones? I find it difficult to make decisions based purely on the reviews as there are too many great headphones while at the same time you (wisely, I think) haven't numerically rated them. It would be fab if you could rank by personal preference and then also by fun/analytical. That would be soooo helpful.
I realise it's a bit of work. Am I right in thinking you are perhaps planning this anyway? something you wrote suggested it, but not overtly.

Since we already have Tyll's measurements and reviews, we don't need more subjective opinion I don't think. What would be really useful would be rankings by several categories. Category 1 might be how much each headphone deviates from neutrality in overall response, then category 2 might be which has the clearest most lucid midrange, and so on.... Then with all of this in a spreadsheet you could just sort the columns you like to see how they stack up for any particular attribute.
