Once you've read all the threads and reviews, and had a look at the measurements on InnerFidelity, the next step in finding just the right headphone is to do some listening. There's really no better way to do that than by going to a local Head-Fi meet. And the New York Head-Fi group sure knows how to throw a great meet.

Here's a taste of what awaits you ...

I've raised teenagers. It's not an easy time. First jobs; getting a driver's license; romance; challenging schoolwork--a heady mix indeed. Teens try to exercise control of the world they find themselves in...but often aren't quite well enough positioned or equipped. The magic bullet, it seems to me, is finding an engaging project that teens can throw themselves into and call their own. One that can make a few bucks is a big bonus.

Here's one such success story...

Steve Guttenberg and I sat down for a little dialog with David Chesky. We talked about sound, music, and particular and sundry concrete abstractions ... or something like that.

Maybe New York was just messin' with my head? Doesn't matter, I had fun.

Brian Gluck at Headphones.com shot me an email last week suggesting we make the contest more open ended by asking a question and selecting a winner from the various answers. D'oh! Why didn't I think of that?

So I thunk and thunk, and thunk some more ... and I think I've thunk of a question. It's actually one I've thought about for a long time.

Well...it has taken me a year to figure out what InnerFidelity is, but I'm ready to give it a shot now. Read on to learn all about InnerFidelity.

Tap your cheek bones, and you'll hear it plain as day. The sound's not coming through your ear canals ... it's just rattling the bones in your ear, and you can hear it. But is this a good way to get your tunes?

Let's find out ...

I talk with Steve Guttenberg on the phone a few times a month, and I very much enjoy our chats. When Steve suggested we have a conversation about measurements and their relevance to audiophiles and write it up as an article, I was all-in immediately.

I hope you enjoy our chat as much as I did.

In a rather shady headphone forum out there on the interweb (that will remain unnamed) lives a group of gentlemen who call themselves: "The Stax Mafia." In recent weeks, having become aware of my work measuring headphones, they've "requested" that I make some measurements of electrostatic headphones.

I just couldn't resist. (I don't want to wake up with a goat head on the pillow next to me.)

Steve Guttenberg dragged me into the objectivist/subjectivist debate...but not kicking and screaming. Because I like to measure headphones, and because I love the experience of listening, I hold that debate pretty regularly all by myself.

Want a peek inside my head?

Many of you will remember my previous attempt at analyzing break-in from this post. A lot of good comments and suggestions were made after the post, and I'd encourage those not familiar with this previous attempt to check it out.

Deciding that my time away at T.H.E. Show Newport would be the perfect opportunity to run some more break-in tests, I programmed my headphone measurement system to take frequency response, square wave, impulse response, and Total Harmonic Distortion data every hour for 100 hours.

Man! That's a lot of numbers ... I'm glad I have a computer.

Not long ago, Todd Green of TTVJaudio.com got ripped off to the tune of about $24,000! That's a huge loss for a small business to absorb. It really hurt Todd.

Today, I'm very happy to report that not only has the thief been caught, but all of Todd's gear has been recovered. The perps were nabbed due to some great work by the Torrence Police Dept, and our very own Justin Wilson at HeadAmp.

This is the story...

Every August for the past 5 years, HeadRoom has made the treck to Southern California to co-host a headphone event with the Los Angeles/Orange County Audio Society. Five years ago it was a curiosity ... these days it's a happening.

Check it out.

It's not often one get's to set-up $37,000+ worth of the world's best headphone gear on the dining room table. I should do a little comparative listening test and report my findings, methinks.

Wasn't easy to write with all the good music going on in my head, though.

Brian Gluck over at www.headphones.com has been very helpful to me as I've worked to start up InnerFidelity. He's a sponsor here; he's sent me gear to audition; but he said he'd like to do more.

And he's putting money where his mouth is ...

In preparing my article “How Planar Magnetic Headphones Work” I became enamored of the work being done by DIYers building their own Orthodynamic cans over in the "Orthodynamic Roundup thread on Head-Fi. The blood, sweat, and tears invested in building and modifying vintage Yamaha Orthodynamics, and cans like the Fostex T50RP is simply stunning, but more striking is the sense of fun and camaraderie so clearly evident in their headphone play that I simply can’t resist trying to find a way to enter into the party in some way.

I think I’ve figured out what I can do.
