InnerFidelity June Update

Hi all! I'll be heading off to T.H.E. Show Newport on Friday, and I thought it would be a good idea to let you guys know what's up with InnerFidelity for this month.

I'll be on a discussion panel with Jorge Cervera (from HeadRoom) on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. at T.H.E. Show. That should be fun. We'll be talking about headphone stuff in general, I'll go over some measurements and what they mean, and we'll take questions from the audience. I'll be posting show report blurbs of anything of interest for personal audio at T.H.E. Show ... I tend to think there won't be much there, but we'll see.

Over the last week I've been taking control measurements of the burned-in pair of AKG Q701 headphones. I've rewritten the test procedures so that I take the following: frequency response; 30Hz and 300Hz square wave response; impulse response; and THD+noise every hour. I've done the test for the first 24 hours of being on the head, and then just finishing up testing 24 hours after being on the head for two days. Hopefully we'll see if the headphone cushions settle in onto the head, but I've played around with this a bit already and it looks like that may be the case (previous tests had a computer glitch so weren't complete).

At any rate, I'll be putting a fresh set of Q701s on the head this afternoon (Wednesday) and will let them settle on to the head for a couple days, and then push the button to start the test Friday before I leave for California. I expect it'll take me a few days after I get back to reduce the data to something usable and we'll get another look at burn-in. I'll also announce the first winner of the comments contest in the break-in article.

I'll be interviewed on Scott Wilkinson's "Home Theater Geeks" podcast on June 20th. I'm certainly looking forward to that. I'll post up a link before the show.

Articles you'll likely see upcoming this month are:

  • Audez'e LCD-2 with new pads ... yummy!
  • Spider Cable's realvoice IEM.
  • Bottlehead Crack and Speedball DIY amp build.
  • How to interpret headphone frequency response graphs.
  • Sony MDR-V6 ... it's a classic!
  • Some kind of contest? Shwag is good, no?
  • .... and more.
Alrighty then, I'm going to try to get one more article up before I head off to California. If you do go to T.H.E. Show Newport and see me (I'll be the geek in an Hawaiian shirt) please feel free to tap me on the shoulder and say, "Hi."

Good stuffs... Thanks Tyll.

Sure, if you see a person tapping on your shoulder with a non-Hawaiian shirt on... that would be ME. AOPU. :-)

Look forward to listening to your speech on the show. Should be exciting.

See you at the show.

To those of you who don't know Tyll, when he says come on up and say Hi, he means it.

Hey Tyll,

It was great to finally meet you, man. And, thanks again for correcting me with pronouncing your name, it's "Tile" :-) I will remember.

Sorry, I missed your seminar this morning. However, I look forward to seeing some feedback and reviews on more headphones here.

Glad to see you enjoying the show and, above all, your "beer"!!!

Cheers,
// Abul "Aopu" Mohsin

Ps. I owe you the picture that Josh (from HeadRoom) took after the show. I will try to send sometime later. All the guys from HeadRoom rock, by the way. Good people, good stuffs.

Hello Mr Hertsens. Nice blog. I'm a little anxious to see your take on the Sony headphones. I've been using them for a couple years for location choral/classical recording. I enjoy their transparency and liveliness, and tendency to reveal problems at the top and bottom. Maybe a little brighter than reality at times? What is reality? Anyway, to treat myself to different ones or accept these as an adequate reference, that is the question. Be cool to have your input. Best wishes, Carl
