Volunteer Headphones for Measurement
Directions for getting your headphones measured for the InnerFidelity database.

Qualified Headphones
Headphones for measurement must be in their stock form. I will still be willing to measure people's DIY modified headphones, but those measurements go into a separate area. Measurements for the main database must be of headphones that are not, and never have been, modified.

Headphones for measurement must be in fairly good shape. It would be unfair to manufacturers or other enthusiasts looking at the data if measurements were taken with headphones that, for example, had very worn out pads or a broken headband. If you'd like to volunteer your headphones, please do so only if they're in solidly serviceable condition.

Headphone must be returned to a U.S. address. I don't really care where they come from, but I can only return the headphones to U.S. addresses due to the way my work UPS shipment software works. In the U.S. I'll pay for shipment both ways.

Volunteering Procedures
If you would like to have your headphones measured for the database please do the following:

  1. Check the "Headphone Data Sheet Download" page to see if your headphone is already measured. I'd prefer to focus on cans that are not on the list at the moment.
  2. If your headphones are not on the list, post in this thread. Your post should include: Manufacturer; model number/name; model year or best guess; your first name and last initial.
  3. Then please send me an email at tyll@tyllhertsens.com with a subject of "Headphone Measurements" and then the make and model number. In the body of the message include: your full name; screen name; make and model headphone; return shipping address; email address; and phone number.

I will then send you a return email thanking you for volunteering and usually just asking you to hang tight. When the time comes that I'm ready for you to send your cans in, I will add your screen name and make/model to the "Up Next" list in the third post of the thread and will email you that I'm ready for the headphones. I will also include the list of stuff that needs to happen in the email so you won't have to come back to this post to look it up.

Then you'll need to pack your headphones up in a box. I prefer the cans not in their original boxes but rather just wrapped up in bubble wrap or paper without any tape on it. That allows me to more easily repack the cans in the same packing materials. Personally, I think the best way is to put the headphones in a gallon size Ziplock and leave the cable coiled but outside the bag to prevent the connector from bashing the cans. Please, oh please, don't send your headphones packed in peanuts. Also, in the box I need a piece of paper on which is printed: your full name; screen name; make and model headphone; return shipping address; email address; and phone number. Please, if remotely possible, do not hand write this but rather type it up on a computer and print it out.

Then, send me a return email with the length, width, and hight, of the box in inches, and the weight rounded up to the next pound. Also, again in your email include: your full name; screen name; make and model headphone; return shipping address; email address; and phone number. (Can you tell I've had problems with this?)

Once I get your return email, I will send you a UPS Ground label by email, and will move your name to the "Incoming" section of the third post of the "Volunteer for Headphone Measurements" thread. You will have to tape the label to the outside of the box and bring it to a UPS location. (Sorry I can't do pick-ups as it will begin to cost too much for this program.)

Once I receive the headphones I will move your name to the "In-House" section. Within one week I will measure your headphones and then put them back in the box with a paper copy of your measurements; ship them off UPS Ground; and move your name into the "Outgoing" section.

Once you receive the box I will need you to email me confirmation that you got your headphones back. When I receive confirmation I will remove your name from the "Outgoing" list, and will add the headphones, your screen name, and the date to the list in the "Measurements Accomplished" forth post in the thread.

As always, I will add the measurements to the AllGraphs.pdf and Data Sheet Download page in my next "InnerFidelity Update".

I'll also mention that the idea of having an on-line comparison tool like HeadRoom's "Build a Graph" remains an important InnerFidelity goal. I don't have any idea of when it might happen, but it gets talked about regularly and various ideas of how to get it done are being explored. I yearn for that day as it will free this database of the bonds of PDFs and let us really play with the comparisons and compensations. Your help getting headphones into this database will be appreciated for a long time to come.

Thank you for your help!!!!

I'm willing to send in my beloved SoundMAGIC HP100. It's got 4 votes (plus one if you add mine, which isn't in the tally). I'm convinced this is one of the better closed cans for the price, all things considered. I'd love to see some measurements.

Stillhart told me you were doing this, asked me to offer my K612. They're stock with only a few months of use, amazing value alongside my K712 and HD700. I also have a pair of 1975-6 Stax SR-X MKIII normal bias, but I love these and don't think anyone requested them (Ken Rockwell has a pretty thorough review on them, but his price is waaaay low).

I'm willing to send my Beyerdynamic DT 150, one of the best closed-backs I've come across. I find it competes with open backs such as the HD 600/650 and the K712 in terms of sound quality. It's not a headphone on the list. I haven't been able to find measurements on this headphone.

Yamaha typo?

You've got Yamaha HPH-MT200 on your list, but I'm pretty sure it should be MT220. I'll add my vote for that one. A quick google suggests the Yamaha MT 200 May be a motorcycle…

Okay, I've got the first three emails from folks and have sent return mails and placed their name on the list.

Please remember you do not need to ask if I want headphones to measure in this thread, I do (as long as they meet the requirements of not having been measured before). Please feel free to just email me with your willingness and required info and I'll get you on the list.

First, what a great idea! And thanks Tyll for measuring my ADDIEMs a little while ago for Innerfidelity. It's always a nice check for the ears.

I have a set of KEF M200's that I'd be happy to send in for measurement if anyone wants to see measurements on them.
Manufacturer: KEF
Model number/name: M200
Model year: I think 2013? I picked these up shortly after release.

I've got the following that I would be willing to send in for measurements (but not all at once of course :). I understand that not all of them would be desirable to test but I'll list them anyway as I'd like to see the measurements for as many as possible. Also, please don't criticize me for being a cheapskate! Maybe I prefer quantity over quality... ;)

Big thanks to all that have helped out so far. I'm going to stop updating the vote list. But if there is a pair of headphones you want to see measured feel free to mention it here as I will be checking into this thread daily and I'll see if I can swing it.

Bassically, the best way to vote is to send your headphones in, or tell a friend who has some about this thread.

Hiya

Hey Tyll, have some cans you haven't measured yet. I'm in Missouri on vacation until next Monday, but when I get back to my house I'll shoot you an email. Here's what I have:
AKG K240 Studio 2014
AKG K240 Sextett Late Production 1978-1979
Audio Technica ATH-EP700 2009 or so. (Was NOS. I got it earlier this year for 40$. I think it's been discontinued recently.)
EDIT:I see someone else has already offered to send in a pair of EP-700's... Didn't see that beforehand.
Also I could send in the MEElectronics M9 classic come to think of it.

Sincerely, Blake L.

It would be nice to get measurements on the Takstar Pro 80 headphones, also known to some as Gemini HSR-1000.
Not only do many people regard them as superb closed headphones for a bargain, but they also gained A LOT of popularity because hardware manufacturer Kingston used it as the technical basis for their Cloud HyperX gaming headset.

These headphones MUST be measured at IF

I hope the following headphones will be measured by Tyll in the near future.

In my opinion, they need to be measured by the most trusted IF measurement procedure not just because measurements of them will satisfy our curiosity, but because of their potential impact in the mass market. They are:

- Amazon's new AmazonBasics Premium headphones: Over-Ear and On-Ear

One headphone overlooked here...

...and unmeasured is the KSC75. It is on the wall of fame but I can't seem to find its measurements here. I am really tempted to buy one just so I can send it over. It would be a cool novelty to have my very own pair of headphones measured with official documentation and, in turn, help this site build up its database in the process.

Beyerdynamic DT100, 2x2k ohm
1970?
Greg V

Best I can tell its circa 1970's, but I honestly have no idea, and my efforts to reach out to Beyer have been unanswered. I picked up the DT100 at a thrift store for a few bucks only to learn its a studio legend of yesteryear, that was eventually supplanted by DT150. Obviously, the most exotic thing about it is that each transducer has TWO THOUSAND ohms impedence. Whether that is artificial or the result of painfully ancient voice coil tech, I would love to see how this thing plays.

Incidentally, I am really stoked to see DT150 getting measured on tyll's rig, I love that headphone and agree it is often overlooked due to age and, well, ugliness.

Volunteer to measure the AKG K240 Monitor

I have an AKG K240 Monitor if you would be willing to measure that. It uses the same driver as the K240 Sextett to my understanding, but instead of the six passive radiators around the main driver, it uses sound ports and acoustic filtering materials.

"2. If your headphones are not on the list, post in this thread. Your post should include: Manufacturer; model number/name; model year or best guess; your first name and last initial."

I'm not really sure why our first name and last initial are necessary in this public forum, but my username should suffice.

Just reminding folks that there's no reason to volunteer headphone for measurements here in this thread. Simply follow the directions at the top and email me and we'll get her done.

Question, Tyll.

When you say headphones have to be stock, does this include the cable? Would recabled headphones be disqualified for the main database? I have to replace cables on my gear every now and then, since copper wire doesnt age well...
